Special programs and book sales planned at libraries

Local libraries have exciting things coming up for patrons this month with fun programs in Ridgeland and a book sale in Madison.

The Ridgeland Library will host both unique and major programs in August. On Saturday, August 20, there will be Vital Hearts CPR, First Aid and AED training presented by Jessica Ridgeway. Customers will learn lifesaving techniques and gain many tools and knowledge that can help you save a life. Please note that this is not a CPR certification course.

In honor of National Tell a Joke Day on August 16, patrons can come to the Ridgeland Library and fill out an entry slip with what they think is their best dad joke. The Dad Joke contest will be open until August 20 and the winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card.

Another program at Ridgeland is Mix Mocktails and Paint Your Own Glass, taking place August 23 at 4:30 p.m. for their monthly Get Crafty DIY and craft group for adults and seniors. Attendees will learn how to mix non-alcoholic Bahama Mamas like a pro and decorate their own glass to enjoy their drink.

“We are thrilled to offer another month of unique programs at the Ridgeland Library,” said Branch Manager Kristen Hillman. “The staff worked hard to cook up – or mix up – new ideas for library programs in August, including mixing summer mocktails to show us your horniest dad joke to win prizes in silver. There is literally something for everyone of any age at the Ridgeland Public Library!”

Madison’s Library Friends are having their summer book sale this month. It will begin on August 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the Pre-release Sale for Members. Members will enter through the back door as the library will be closed for inventory.

“This is a special shopping time for all Madison Library friends to shop before items are available for everyone,” said branch manager Tammie Terry. “There will be a table set up to join Friends of the Library outside of the sale so customers can join Friends and walk straight into the stores. Individual memberships are $12 per year and family memberships are $20 per year. Other membership levels are also available.

The book sale will be open every August 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bag day will be the following Monday, August 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Fill a plastic grocery bag for $2,” Terry said. “We have the bags!”

The book sale will conclude with a free day on the 30th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., where customers can help themselves to whatever remains of the book sale.

“The book sale is very popular, and friends will have a lot of good books on sale,” Terry said. “All items included in the book sale are donations from our patrons. Our friends have worked hard to sort through all the donations and always have a great selection of items.
