Martin J. Lecker: Preparing for Upcoming Labor Day Sales | Company

Hope you were able to take advantage of last weekend’s tax free weekend sale.

Now, let’s look at some products that are typically discounted in the coming days leading up to Labor Day.

MATTRESS SALE

Sale promotions for mattresses and other bedding products usually take place on Labor Day weekend. A few companies are even ahead of their competitors and start their promotions the week before.

Take e-tailer mattress company Saatva, which will be offering promotional discounts of up to $500 with any mattress purchased over Labor Day weekend. Saatva will have an early access period starting August 25, according to Shari Ajayi, Saatva’s public relations manager. Bedding and other accessories will also be part of the Saatva promotion. You should check their website (saatva.com) as more offers may be added.

You may want to test out a mattress first before buying it online. But how?

Saatva has its New England flagship store located in Boston’s Back Bay, although there is another option. Nick Tambascio, Saatva’s Boston viewing room manager, suggests researching what’s important to you — mattress type, firmness, mattress size and customer service policies — before you buy by taking the quiz from six questions from Saatva on his website. You will have to be contacted by them, but it can be worth it.

The six questions are: Who shares the bed with you? How would you describe your sleeping partner from a list of choices? What is your weight range? How do you like your mattress to feel (choices listed)? What is your main sleeping position (choices listed)? And what are your sleep concerns (choices listed)?

This online quiz can be found on their website. These questions can also help you better prepare when doing your own comparison shopping.

The Mattress Firm store manager in Great Barrington expects Labor Day weekend sale promotions to be announced shortly. Last year, Mattress Firm promotions included a free adjustable base, a king mattress for the price of a queen mattress, free mattress protectors and/or pillows.

Mattress Firm Store Manager Norman Harris believes that when buying a bed at a retail outlet, personal relationships are part of the service customers will receive compared to an online experience.

JEWELERY DISCOUNTS

Currently, Macy’s runs online jewelry sales of more than 20,000 items daily. These include diamond pendant necklaces, white gold bracelets, sterling silver earrings and diamond cluster rings. Some discounts can reach 70%. You can expect these promotions to continue through Labor Day. This is the time of year when retailers and e-merchants offer discounts on their jewelry.

Kay Jewelers traditionally hold sales promotions on Labor Day weekend, so check out both their websites (kay.com) and their outlets. If you’re a new customer and sign up for their email, you get $25 off jewelry costing at least $99 if you’re a first-time buyer.

APPLIANCES: LABOR DAY SALES PROMOTIONS

Appliances will go on sale this Labor Day weekend.

The Home Depot in Pittsfield is offering Labor Day discounts on select appliances. More details will be released around August 22 or 23, as confirmed by their customer service. These appliance sales promotions include refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens and microwaves.

Since this column is after the sales tax-free weekend and before Labor Day, appliance store owners have yet to hear from vendors to announce details of upcoming sales promotions from Labor Day. Further details will be provided in my next column scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

SHOP LOCAL ON LABOR DAY

Many local businesses are expecting sales promotions for Labor Day weekend.

In Great Barrington, Connie Griffin, the owner of Griffin, said some items will be reduced over Labor Day weekend. His shop offers men’s clothing, homewares, toys, books and jewelry. Ask the cashier what’s on sale.

If you like spirituality, mysticism or metaphysics, visit Crystal Essence, also in Great Barrington. There are books, clothes, gifts, crystals, private tarot readings, minerals, gems, and jewelry. Melissa Payne, the owner, offers sale promotions on select aura t-shirts and photographs. Aura photography is all about finding your energy through a specialized double exposure technique.

At Lenox, Purple Plume owner Judie Culver encourages shoppers to check out her sales of over 50% off gifts, jewelry and apparel. As you know, these deep discounts are meant to eliminate end-of-season inventory.

Also at Lenox, Casablanca owner Tony Chojnowski is offering summer sales through Labor Day weekend. Go in person and see what savings can be had on items like clothing, shoes, and jewelry.

These are just a few examples of local shops in Berkshire County. Find time to support local Berkshires businesses and take advantage of their business promotions. It can also be a good opportunity to explore some city centers that you haven’t visited in a while.
