Author Roy Schwartz contacted me a few months ago to let me know about the release of his book “Is Superman Circumcised?” “. The title obviously stands out and is intriguing immediately, but I have to admit I was skeptical about the content of the book and wasn’t sure what to expect. The catchy title aside, Schwartz’s book is truly “The Complete Jewish History of the World’s Greatest Hero”.
I have read quite a few books on the history of Superman, some of them brilliantly written and very detailed and informative. I have to say that Schwartz’s book is among the best. He really digs deep into those early days of the comic book industry and brings those New York training days to life.
“Is Superman circumcised?” Is not a reading to be taken lightly. It’s not a quick or easy read, and it’s definitely heavy on religious connections. As a Christian myself, I have always seen the most recent connections that the creators made between the Man of Steel and Jesus, but Schwartz disputes many of these ideas and draws interesting parallels to Jewish teachings. , especially with regard to Moses.
I consider myself an avid reader, and although Schwartz is a great writer, I have to admit that this book is sometimes a challenge. Like I said, it’s not light reading material and given that it focuses on the Jewish creators of Superman and the comic book industry at the start, I got a bit lost. in some of the Jewish references. However, that shouldn’t prevent anyone from appreciating the rich subject matter. It’s obvious that Schwartz has a deep love for both his culture and the comic book industry it spawned.
“Is Superman circumcised?” : The Complete Jewish History of the World’s Greatest Hero ”is definitely a book that all Superman fans should add to their collection, especially if you are interested in the tales behind the stories.

by Roy Schwartz (Author)
Superman is the original superhero, an American icon and arguably the most famous character in the world, and he’s Jewish! Launched in June 1938, the Man of Steel was created by two Jewish teenagers, Jerry Siegel, the son of immigrants from Eastern Europe, and Joe Shuster, an immigrant. They based their hero’s origin story on Moses, his strength on Samson, his mission on the golem, and his nebulous secret identity on themselves. They made him a refugee fleeing the disaster on the eve of WWII and sent him to destroy Nazi tanks almost two years before the United States entered the war. Over the following decades, Superman’s predominantly Jewish writers, artists, and publishers continued to borrow Jewish motifs for their stories, basing Krypton’s past on Genesis and the Exodus, his society on Jewish culture, the trial of Lex Luthor on Adolf Eichmann’s and future vacation. celebrating Superman on Passover. A fascinating journey through comic book lore, American history and Jewish lore, this book examines the entirety of Superman’s career from 1938 to the present day and is sure to give readers a new appreciation for the Mensch. of Steel!
